You can open the Gospel of John in Greek and read it with real confidence. You know your participles, your aorist stems, the vocabulary that carried the words of the Lord Jesus Christ to the nations. That is no small thing.
But Koine Greek is a river. Attic Greek — the Greek of Athens' so-called golden age, of Xenophon, Plato and Thucydides — is the spring that river flows from. The syntax, the verb system, the very shape of Greek expression that the apostles inherited and that the Holy Spirit used to give us the New Testament — all of it was formed first in Attic.
Until you can read Attic Greek, there's a ceiling on your scholarship. You know the house the apostles lived in — but you haven't yet walked around in the pagan streets surrounding it.
I'm Jordash Kiffiak. For years I've taught Koine Greek and watched capable students hit the same wall: real comfort in the Gospels, but nothing beyond it. Attic Greek can feel like a locked door, guarded by grammars written for people who already had years of "Classics" studies behind them.

Those are not small things to set beside Jesus Christ, who emptied himself, took the form of a servant and was obedient even to death on a cross.
